Life before Comedy
From skateboarding to photos and videos to slam poetry and high education, here's how Mickey spent his time growing up.
University Studies & Poetry
A graduate of Georgetown University's McDonough School of Business, Mickey majored in Entrepreneurship with a minor in Filmmaking. He was an active contributor to the school's independent poetry magazine Bossier. Mickey also hosted the school's Snapchat Story page. His short film, Grey Areas, took home first prize for dramatic short film in the Universtiy's film competition. Mickey first dipped his toes into performance art competing in poetry slams in New York City. He was a regular at the Bowery Poetry Club and would compete in poetry slams at the iconic Nuyorican Poets Cafe.
Media & Photography
Mickey has shot photos for brands like Free People. Urban Outfitters, Caroline Contstas, Nike x Urban, and Wilhelmina, created videos for musicians like Iann Dior and Lana Del Rey, as well as crafted virtual reality content for car companies like Honda. He produced two large scale art-focused charity campaigns - #DANCELIKEMANDELA to celeabrate Nelson Mandela's Centennial, and The Maya Angelou Mural Festival in South Central Los Angeles. Mickey has had two solo photography exhibitions - "Icons of Mustique" and "The Spirit of Mexico"
Upbringing and Heritage
Mickey was raised in Long Island to parents from Italian and Jewish, a classic New York mix. Growing up, he was very close to his Trinidadian babysitter and his grandmother who immigrated from Sicily. As a middle child, Mickey rebelled by taking up skateboarding and, from there, picking up cameras.
Skateboarding
Mickey spent his entire childhood skateboarding. Picking up a shop sponsor, Mickey and his friends would compete in competitions across New York City. From skateboarding, he picked up his first camera at the age of 11, a Canon GL2, and began filming videos of him and his friends. Mickey and his friends were responsible for advocating to get the first skatepark build in their town. Mickey continues to skateboard around New York under the moniker of "Never Ollie."
